Joe Mahon will discuss the Federal Reserve and its role in the economy before turning to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on the economy, and particularly on the recent increase in inflation and the state of the labor market and employment.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Joe Mahon is a Regional Outreach Director for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Joe’s primary responsibilities involve tracking current business conditions across the six-state Ninth Federal Reserve District, which includes northwest Wisconsin, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana.

Along with tracking the overall economy, sectors Joe follows closely include agriculture, manufacturing, energy and mining. He pays special attention to prices families and businesses pay – which are central to the Federal Reserve’s dual mandate of promoting stable prices and maximum employment. Joe is a central contributor to the Beige Book, which is a report of current business conditions published by the Federal Reserve System every six weeks. Joe’s work includes extensive outreach to business and community leaders, and he gives frequent speeches on economic conditions across the Ninth District.

Prior to his current position, Joe served as a regional economist and as a staff writer and analyst for Minneapolis Fed publications the Region and fedgazette. He holds degrees in economics and journalism from the University of Minnesota.

Ron Wirtz will discuss the speed and breath of recovery among firms, workers and broader Wisconsin and Minnesota economies, and role of labor force on economic growth going forward. Using an interactive survey, Ron will also gauge attendees’ sentiment regarding recent business activity, hiring demand, labor availability, and other issues.

He also tracks construction, real estate, consumer spending and tourism. Ron is a central contributor to the Beige Book, which is a report of current business conditions published by the Federal Reserve System every six weeks. Ron’s work includes extensive outreach to business and community leaders, and he gives frequent speeches on economic conditions across the Ninth District.

Previous to this position, Ron was editor of the fedgazette, a regional business and economics journal published by the Minneapolis Fed. Here, he conducted in-depth research on such topics as labor markets and job growth, health care consolidation, the Bakken oil boom, income mobility, disability, public pensions, and many others.
